For a budding soap opera super couple, Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) and Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Chavez) have certainly paid their dues on “General Hospital.” The character of Spencer was born on the show in 2006, and has been involved in quite a bit of mischief growing up. In his adult life, while he’s made a few bad choices, Spencer has really stepped up to be a better man for his girlfriend, Trina. He’s also looking to find a way to become the legal guardian of his baby brother, Ace. Spencer and Ace were kidnapped by his uncle Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy), who was unleashing a deadly plot on the world. With the help of Trina and a handful of others, Victor was defeated and everyone got home safe.

Ace is the product of a one-night stand between Spencer’s father, Nikolas Cassadine (then Marcus Coloma), and his ex-girlfriend, the nefarious Esme Prince (Avery Pohl). Esme was on the run from the authorities, due to her litany of crimes, and ended up with amnesia before Ace was born. Because of her evil ways, Spencer has vowed to make sure that Ace isn’t influenced by his mom, even though she doesn’t remember any of the bad things she’s done.

As Spencer and Trina embarked on an adventure with baby Ace, the actors had something to say about their youthful co-star’s portrayers.

Baby Ace is a scene-stealer

In the latest issue of Soap Opera Digest, Nicholas Chavez and Tabyana Ali discuss their characters who have become a hugely popular couple on “General Hospital.” Chavez credited casting director Mark Teschner with having the right instincts to see the chemistry between actors when he cast Ali in the role of Trina Robinson. The actors discussed how they work together behind the scenes to prepare and were also happy to have been involved in an action-oriented storyline.

When the topic came up about their little co-stars, Jay and Joey Clay — who play baby Ace — Ali explained that Chavez has worked more with the babies than she has. But in the scenes where she did appear with Ace, she stated, “He is such a good baby. I will say I realized how weak I am, though! I thought I was strong, but he has really put me to a challenge!” She added that she’d love to have more scenes with Ace. Chavez also explained that it’s difficult to compete with a baby that steals scenes and has everyone’s attention while he’s trying to say his lines. He added, “The baby will just flirt with Tabyana in front of me, as if I’m not even there! Which is so crazy. He gives her the eyes and everything.”

Hopefully, as Spencer moves toward getting custody of Ace, Ali and Chavez will have more screen time with the baby — without being kidnapped by diabolical villains.
