Sister Wives season 18 episode 3 provided some of the most dramatic moments of the season thus far, including a massive fight between Kody Brown and his estranged wife Janelle Brown. After Christine Brown left Kody and the family, moving to Salt Lake City, things changed tremendously for the Brown family. Kody, who has been on a tear throughout Sister Wives season 18 trying to grapple with the fact that Christine left him, spent the next several months trying to find reasoning for his ex-wife’s vitriol and working to mend his self-proclaimed hatred for her.
The current season of Sister Wives picked up some time after the last season left off, with the Brown family dealing with their first holiday season without Christine. The somber, sobering nature of Christine’s departure hit Kody, as well as Janelle, Meri Brown, and Robyn Brown, all of whom were still married to Kody at the time. In the most recent episode of Sister Wives season 18, Kody tried to blow off some stream on a guy’s trip, but wound up coming back with a new level of anger. After a massive fight with Janelle, Kody isn’t sure where he stands while his wife has never felt more clear.
Kody Takes A Guys Trip With His Brothers & Friends
Although the majority of Sister Wives season 18 episode 3 takes place elsewhere, the opening moments see Kody on a boy’s trip. In order to blow off some steam after some difficult times during the holiday season, Kody and his brothers as well as a few friends went on a trip together. Kody explained the relationship status of each guy on the trip, sharing that his brother isn’t in plural marriage, but he has a friend who is that attended. Regardless, Kody was hopeful his friends would be able to help him wrap his mind around what was going on at home.
While the trip was likely helpful for Kody to unwind a bit, it didn’t really do much for the state of his relationships. As Kody explained the impact of Christine’s departure on his other marriages, both Robyn and Meri’s points of view were shown in interview segments. Robyn explained that she feels Kody is “all over the place”, explaining that “One minute he’s angry and then he’s very upset and sad, and then another minute he’s in this peaceful place where he’s like, ‘Maybe this was meant to be,’ and then he goes back to angry again.” Robyn shares that she finds Kody’s current head space “scary”.
Meri, on the other hand, takes offense to the way Kody speaks about jumping from marriage to marriage. When Kody jokes about being able to jump from one wife to another if the first one isn’t happy about the state of the relationship, Meri is taken aback. She shares, “that kind of comment just makes me want to vomit… figure out how you can work together and be together instead of using somebody else as an escape. Are you kidding me?” While Kody’s guy trip allows him some much-needed space, it puts his marriages in jeopardy.
Kody And Janelle Clash Over Their Parenting Styles

The main event of Sister Wives season 18 episode 3 was the fight between Janelle and Kody over their plans for Christmas. Janelle explained in an interview segment that Kody had made it clear to her that she would need to make separate plans for the holiday season, and though the two had not spoken about it explicitly, she’d started to do so. During Sister Wives season 18 episode 2, Janelle and Kody had a bit of tension about their sons Gabe and Garrison, who Kody is not speaking to. Janelle invited Kody over to hash out their holiday plans, but things quickly went awry.
Kody explained in an interview segment that Janelle’s plans for Christmas “feel like a knife to the heart” because as much as it’s “probably his fault”, it seems like “the complete degradation of our family.” He asked Janelle about her plans, and when she said their sons were wondering if he was going to try and stop by their rental to see everyone for the holiday, Kody snapped. Janelle explained that the kids felt like they needed to apologize to Kody, which he’d originally told Janelle to relay to them, but they weren’t interested and Kody wasn’t making an effort.
Wound up quickly, Kody tried to push the responsibility to repair his relationship with the kids onto Janelle. Angry in her own right, Janelle explained that Kody has said she needed to “choose your loyalties. Choose between me and your children,” Kody was quick to shoot her down. The pair exchanged barbs, saying they were both gaslighting each other as they remembered events differently. When Janelle hit a nerve, calling Kody out for manipulating the situation, he got even angrier.
Kody Brown Broke The Fourth Wall On Sister Wives Season 18
While this has happened from time to time in the past, Kody broke the fourth wall and spoke directly to the camera during his fight with Janelle. Though it’s not common for the Sister Wives cast to acknowledge the cameras, Kody got angry enough at being called manipulating that he felt compelled to speak directly to it. He pointed at the camera and shouted, “ell me how I’m manipulating. No, no, tell the world. Tell the whole world, and then go hang out with your buddy, Christine. Tell the world how I’ve lied, how I’ve manipulated, how I’ve done you wrong.”
Kody continued on to call Christine Janelle’s “co-parent” before berating her for cheating him out of time with his family. Janelle, who tried to remain calm throughout the argument, was clearly heated. She continued trying to make her point despite Kody overpowering her in volume, but eventually shut down. The pair weren’t able to find any mutual ground and Kody stormed out of Janelle’s apartment in a huff, shouting expletives as he leaves. Janelle asked the cameras to shut down, but was shown in an interview segment explaining her thought process.
While Janelle wasn’t in the best place with Kody before their argument, the moment brought some things to light for both sides. Janelle explained that she asked Kody to get his things out of her apartment after the argument. She felt hurt by the argument, explaining, “It was shocking. I was really upset when he left because it feels like there’s a finality to it and now I’m worried about what happens to me…it feels like Kody and I are no longer going to be a couple.” With the pair’s future potentially sealed, Janelle was left to pick up the pieces from the argument and move forward as best she could.
Christine Tried To Mend Some Of The Strain In The Family
After the fight, a moment of decompression was needed in the episode and delivered by way of Christine helping Janelle’s son Garrison bake over FaceTime. Christine explained that she had been involved in so much of Janelle’s kids lives, but when she left Flagstaff she knew she was leaving them behind as well. Garrison, who spoke in an interview segment about the fact that he and his siblings “cherish the bond” they share with Christine and her children, reached out to Christine for help and made her feel like she was part of his life even after the split.

Kody met up with Meri and Robyn to discuss their Christmas plans, explaining that he and Janelle had fought by sharing, “We threw rocks at glass houses,” with his other wives. Kody, not understanding the situation from any perspective other than his own, made it clear that he didn’t feel welcome or wanted by Janelle’s children. “I’d rather just be around people who want to be around me…I can’t speak to Janelle now. We’ve crossed the line,” Kody explained to a stunned Meri and Robyn. Sister Wives season 18 has exposed the first of many difficult moments to come, and the tension has only started to build.
Sister Wives airs Sundays at 10 p.m. EST on TLC.
