Blue Bloods season 14: Will Sami Gayle return as Nicky Reagan-Boyle?

Nicky Reagan-Boyle has been part of Blue Bloods from the very beginning. She was introduced in season 1, and has undergone countless changes over the course of the show. She’s not only aged, but she’s gone away to college and established herself as a character outside of just being the kid of Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan).

Nicky is a peripheral character within the show, however, and the rumors that have hounded the show ahead of season 14 have mostly had to do with the notion that certain characters will be cut from the show to limit the budget of each episode. Is Nicky going to be part of this collateral damage?

Is Sami Gayle leaving Blue Bloods?

Fortunately, the answer is no. The stars of Blue Bloods; Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, and Moynahan, agreed to take pay cuts ahead of season 14, so that the cast and crew can remain intact. This means that all of the supporting characters you’ve come to know and love over the course of the show will still be around. At least, as much as they’ve been around in recent years.

Nicky’s diminished role within the show (she was absent from season 12 and was in one episode in season 13) is reflective of the personal life of the actor who plays her: Sami Gayle. The decision to have Nicky move to San Francisco coincided with Gayle’s decision to attend school at Columbia University. That said, Blue Bloods showrunner Kevin Wade is eager to get the character (and the Gayle) back on the show.

“Hopefully she’ll swing by”, Wade told Express. “Once it had become long enough, it was almost like, ‘Well, we should bring her back at least for a family dinner.’ We actually were going to do that last season, and I don’t think her schedule matched up with ours.”

Given that Gayle still has plans to act (she appeared in a stage production in January), we’re optimistic that we will get a chance to see her character in season 14.
