Sister Wives – Kody’s 8 Worst Feuds With His Kids (Gabe, Madison & More) Explained

Sister Wives star Kody Brown has 18 children, and he’s clashed with many of his sons and daughters over the years. When it comes to family dysfunction, Kody’s in a league of his own. He once encouraged viewers to, “multiply,” as per the series, and now, he’s dealing with scads of children who aren’t as malleable as they used to be, including Gabriel Brown and Maddie Brown Brush. Conflict should be Kody’s middle name, with three wives running for the hills, and children venting about him and Robyn Brown whenever they can. Hearing what the kids have to say is fascinating, as they’ve been raised in such a unique way.

Kody’s childrens’ issues with him make it seem like the kids are rather bitter about their upbringings, and it’s easy to sympathize. After all, there are so many children, and only one father. His kids with Meri, Janelle and Christine Brown need to fight for his attention, while Robyn’s right by his side, seemingly making sure that he prioritizes his children with her (and by another man). Many of Kody’s kids are grown-ups now, and dealing with the fact that Kody’s polygamy experiment didn’t work out. Only Robyn’s still married to him, and she’s all about monogamy these days.

8, Gabe Brown Has Sounded Off About His Famous Father

Gabe definitely feels slighted by his father sometimes, and Kody’s son has spoken out. It may make him feel better to share his opinions publicly, perhaps because he doesn’t feel like his dad really listens to him. It’s quite unusual for kids to go online and put down their parents (although it’s certainly not unheard of), and it isn’t exactly a good sign. However, since the Browns are reality stars, they handle conflict differently than a “regular” family (whatever that is) would.

One troubling incident took place in 2021. Kody was on the phone with Gabe, but forgot to wish him a happy birthday. While this may have been an unintentional oversight, it hurt Gabe’s feelings. He cried because his special day didn’t seem important to his dad. However, more has happened that paints an even grimmer picture.

The pandemic really unleashed the beast in Kody, turning him into a hypervigilant person who enforced the strictest COVID-19 avoidance strategies. While it’s understandable that he wanted to be careful, his approach meant distancing himself from anyone who didn’t follow the same rules, including some of his kids. Gabe couldn’t get with Kody’s stringent program, and as a result, there’s bad blood between father and son. Gabe felt devalued by his dad as the pandemic continued, and eventually stopped speaking to his father.

In a January 2023 Sister Wives “One On One” finale, Kody bit the bullet, telling Gabe (and Garrison Brown) that he was sorry. He said that his goal was to “protect” his family. However, his then-spouses, except for Robyn, seemed to believe that he leveraged the pandemic to achieve another covert aim, which was spending all of his time with his one legal wife, Robyn, and her children. Kody’s kids with Meri, Janelle and Christine probably felt the same way.

7, Madison Brown Brush Criticized Kody’s Wife Robyn’s Controlling Ways

Kody and Robyn are, if anything, a united front. If one of Kody’s kids has issues, Robyn’s likely right there in the mix, making things worse. This was underscored when Maddie shared her frustration over Robyn’s relentless need for control. In March 2022, footage from the series surfaced. It showed Maddie lashing out at Robyn. Of course, Robyn started it, by failing to mind her own business.

At the time, Maddie was dealing with Robyn’s disapproval, because Kody’s “queen” didn’t like the church that Maddie preferred. Robyn oversteps a lot, playing a maternal role when she’s not even a child’s mother. Maddie’s mom is Janelle. Of course, Kody fuels the fire by doing nothing about his wife’s antics. He’s much too passive, perhaps because he doesn’t want a war with his wife.

Maddie has been courageously dealing with a lot. She has a family of her own now, and her daughter Evangelynn’s foot was amputated when she was only one year old. That’s very sad, and to make matters worse, trolls mom-shamed Maddie. As per People, one “fan” went for the jugular, trashing an already stressed and upset mother for taking an educated and experienced surgeon’s advice, and allowing the operation to happen. Evangelynn has oligodactyly, and was born with a range of health issues, including missing fingers, a bowed tibia bone, and missing toes. The rude commenter stated, “You cut her foot off? If she was functional, why did you amputate?”

6, Savanah Brown’s Relationship With Kody Is Complex

Savanah’s another of Janelle and Kody’s children, and she was under strain when her parents’ relationship crumbled. However, she put aside any hard feelings at her high school graduation, which her father and Janelle attended. Divorces (spiritual unions or not) are extremely painful for children and teens. When a family dynamic is altered, it’s such a profound change, like something in the universe has shifted forever. That can make a kid or teenager feel unsafe and alone.

The fact that Savanah spent time with Kody during her grad ceremony’s a good thing. However, the three wives leaving Kody shows that a polygamous marriage can be treacherous for children. Since Kody has so many kids to spend time with, when things go wrong, his children may feel like their bonds with him will weaken. While Kody may not be the perfect father, kids need their dads, and it’s good that Savanah reunited with Kody.

While Savanah is just 18, and hasn’t been vocal about her father, like some of the Brown offspring, she probably feels how most kids feel when their parents split up, which is caught in the middle. While it’s also possible that she’s taken her mother’s side, what’s positive is that she hasn’t cut Kody off. She’s open to being with him, despite a whirlwind of drama. However, as she grows older, she may grow bolder, as Kody’s other children have, and begin to share negative feelings about her upbringing.

Kody has been called out for favoring his daughter Breanna Brown over Savanah. For example, he gushed about helping Breanna (whom he adopted after Meri divorced Kody so could marry Robyn) to get her driver’s license, as per TV Shows Ace. This was perceived as him preferring to do “dad things” with Breanna, versus Savanah. Kody’s constantly accused of favoritism, and many of his feuds with the kids are based on that. Regardless, after a break, Savanah and Kody are spending time together.

5, Kody Called Garrison A “Narcissist” While The Sister Wives Cameras Rolled

Sister Wives‘ Garrison Brown is older and bolder, but not as old and bold as Kody. Nonetheless, Garrison can push Kody’s buttons, even if he doesn’t intend to. It was fairly shocking when the preening peacock Kody called his son a “narcissist” while they were being filmed. Of course, kids and parents fight. People say things that they don’t mean. However, they don’t usually do it when the heated conversations are going to air on TV.

Their problems didn’t stop after that. By late 2022, Janelle couldn’t even agree on how to celebrate Thanksgiving with Kody, perhaps because of the dynamic between Garrison and his father, which she described as, “very estranged,” as per the show. Drama is a given in the Brown family, but Kody sets himself up to fail by losing his temper in front of the world. Once those scenes are recorded and aired, there’s little doubt that he wears the black hat sometimes. Since he’s supposed to be the mature one, he has to take accountability for losing it while he’s being filmed.

4, Gwendlyn Brown Once Made Fun of “Useless Dads” Online

Gwendlyn’s an instigator, and totally fearless when it comes to calling out her famous dad and his controversial wife. She may have inherited a certain self-righteous quality from her father. Then again, she could have good reasons for airing her grievances at YouTube. In one blistering salvo, Gwen criticized “useless dads” online, which probably didn’t make Kody very happy. She’s able to earn money by putting him down, and this may inspire her to go further than she should. A reality TV “kid” may push the boundaries more than someone who didn’t grow up with a film crew close by.

In May of 2023, she posted her video, adding that some fathers, “can’t take care of the children.” This barely cryptic tirade showed just how much anger she’s been storing up through the years, and that’s not really very funny. In the past, she’s also dissed her father for spending too much money. She’s got issues, but Kody still attended her recent wedding to Beatriz Querioz.

3, Ysabel Brown Didn’t Get What She Needed From Kody

Ysabel is a brave person who endured years of pain due to scoliosis. During the pandemic, she was able to get an operation that might ease all of that chronic discomfort. Of course, she wanted the surgery. However, she likely also wanted her father there with her, as getting invasive surgery can be scary. There’s always the risk of a complication. It’s a good time to have immediate family around, offering love and moral support.

Christine, Ysabel’s mother, came through for her daughter. She was there when Ysabel needed her the most (masked up, of course). It was Kody who wouldn’t break his pandemic rule to be with his daughter. He would have preferred that she delay the operation, but she was in so much pain. Kody’s done a lot of bad things, but this particular incident is one of his most selfish acts. However, in his view, what would be selfish is putting others at risk by going to the hospital to be with his daughter.

Trans is brave. It’s the decision to live the way a person wants to live, to be who they really are. When Leon let the world know that they’re transgender, it was pure courage. Since Sister Wives is steeped in religion, it was particularly brave, as Leon surely knew how some people who watch the show (and consider the Bible the literal word of God) would react. However, Kody has still sniped at Leon, regardless of how totally inappropriate that might seem.

As per the show, Kody unloaded in a voiceover. He said, “Leon, Paedon, Dayton, Aurora, Breanna, they don’t fit in well with the rest of the family.” While he was insulting many of his children at once, the fact that he would pick on someone who was going through a transgender journey was truly disturbing. Kody obviously lacks self-awareness, and maybe empathy. When Kody does stuff like this, he’s so unlikable.

1, Kody’s Problems With Paedon Brown Are Common Knowledge

Paedon is one of his father’s most outspoken critics. He has basically accused Kody of using him and certain siblings because he wasn’t able to patch things up with Christine. While this may not be true, it says a lot about his relationship with his dad. If Paedon felt loved by Kody, he would never talk about him this way. Something is very wrong, and that’s not the only time that Kody’s son has called him out. Paedon has even tangled with Robyn, whom he believes won’t forgive him for being rude to her kids.

It seems like Paedon may have an attitude sometimes, but so does Kody. Perhaps they’re birds of a feather. Sometimes, when people are too much alike, they can really clash. They see their own flaws in the other person. Hopefully, in the future, Paedon and Kody can make peace. Peace isn’t really what Sister Wives is about lately, or ever, but it’s always a worthy goal.
