Is Sister Wives’ Kody Brown A Bad Dad?

Sister Wives' Kody Brown's been dad-shamed in the past. Does the troubled patriarch, who recently attended his daughter's wedding, deserve the shade?

Sister Wives patriarch Kody Brown recently played the loving father while attending his daughter Gwendlyn Brown’s July 15 wedding to Beatriz Queiroz, but he’s been dad-shamed for years. Kody’s used to the relentless shade. However, the fact that his parenting’s criticized may really sting. While he’s probably got a thick skin after years of being trolled online, it’s safe to say that no father appreciates being called a bad dad. This type of commentary may be totally uncalled-for. Nonetheless, there are signs that Kody often hits turbulence with his 18 children.

In the past, Kody’s parenting fails have made him public enemy number one. For example, in 2021, he was ridiculed for forgetting his son Gabriel Brown’s 20th birthday, and his gaffe made Gabe cry. Meanwhile, blushing bride Gwendlyn has turned dissing Kody and Robyn Brown into a sort of cottage industry. When Gwen isn’t slagging off Kody for spending too much money, she’s analyzing every other move that he and his one remaining wife make. No one who’s subjected to that kind of scrutiny is going to have a stainless image, but how much of the dad-shaming is truly deserved?

Was Attending Gwendlyn Brown’s Wedding A PR Move?

Forgetting his son’s birthday was bad, but not showing up for his daughter Ysabel Brown’s scoliosis surgery was so much worse. Kody was in full-on lockdown mode during the COVID-19 pandemic, and apparently, masking up wouldn’t have given him enough courage to support his very brave daughter. Thankfully, a skilled surgeon had the gumption to operate on her during such a strange and difficult time. Before her operation, she lived with chronic pain for years.

After these debacles, polygamy’s crown prince decided to put on his glad rags and make the scene at his daughter Gwendlyn’s wedding, even though she puts him down at YouTube. Since she’s been so hard on her father, it’s easy to wonder if Kody’s doing damage control. He’s a star, and few celebrities are unaware of how they come across.

While it’s perhaps crass to suggest that a parent’s making a PR move by going to their adult child’s wedding, it’s not impossible that Kody was thinking of his image. How could he not? Bombarded with insults, he has little choice but to confront his own weaknesses. He used to be more likable, as a father and in general, but he’s hardened considerably over the years. Kody’s gotten cynical about polygamy and so much more. His Coyote Pass pipe dream went up in smoke, and what’s left? Robyn, and a passel of “brats” who just don’t appreciate him.

Kody Has Shown Love For His Kids

Although Kody lived with multiple women, and slept with them all at one time or another (one more than the others), his image used to be surprisingly wholesome. After all, the Browns believed that they were following God’s will. They were convinced that the universe would reward them because they were part of a plural marriage. This isn’t necessarily something that the Browns should be judged for. Those who don’t believe in polygamy, such as atheists, might point to the fact that Kody (and Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn Brown) got religious training so extreme that it was akin to brainwashing.

If a person hears something over and over again, they’re likely to start believing it, unless they’re very strong-minded. Kody and his wives were involved in a religious sect that was radical and offbeat, yet astonishingly old-fashioned. Kody tried to live up to the patriarchal ideal, spreading his seed like nobody’s business. He wanted as many babies as possible. However, adorable little infants eventually grow up, and sometimes, they turn on their parents.

Way back when, Kody seemed so sweet when he participated in fun activities with the wives and children. Everyone lived together in a big house, and there was a communal vibe that was an intriguing blend of weird and endearing. The children seemed happy, as there were so many moms around to hang out with them. Kody would put on his suit and go to work, and come home with a big smile on his face. He’d be present for the kids.

However, innocent children who love and trust their parents one hundred percent are quite easy to adore. It’s more difficult to sustain love when it’s complicated, and kids who gripe create complications. Kody certainly loves his children, but due to his faults, and maybe some of theirs, times have really changed.

Raising one child is hard enough, but eighteen? How can a parent give quality time to all of those kids? They answer is that they can’t, and that’s part of the reason why Kody gets a bad rap. He took breeding to the next level, possibly biting off way more than he could chew. Was he prepared to give those 18 children everything that they needed emotionally? He may have thought the women would handle most of that.

Life marches on and people change. Marital strife, money problems, aging, anger, inertia… so many factors can make people different than they used to be. Life experience changed Kody, and now, he’s sometimes at war with his offspring. Also, he’s passive-aggressively pushed three wives away, and then blamed them for leaving.

While he’s got issues, Kody’s not all bad as a parent. It’s just that his mistakes are so public. He’s made terrible decisions, and is probably too stubborn to understand how grave some of his errors were. However, he wanted all of his children. While he may not be the dad he was when they were little, they are his sons and daughters forever.

Kody’s a flawed parent, but who isn’t? Having fewer spouses around, with their inevitable wants, needs and complaints, may free him up to build stronger bonds with his children. At least, Sister Wives star Kody can try. While he’s strongly hinted that working and making money is more satisfying than spending time with his kids, money isn’t everything, and he may not have learned that lesson yet.
